Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield first started slinging scoops in a renovated gas station in Burlington, Vermont, in 1984. Since then, Ben & Jerry’s has become the best-selling ice cream brand in the world.

The socially responsible company is the top-selling ice cream brand in the United States ($936 million in sales in 2021) and continues to dazzle ice cream fanatics with exciting and complex ice cream flavors. They’ve also released some stinkers.

These are the best and worst Ben & Jerry’s ice cream flavors. Did your favorite make the top 10, or did it get freezer burned in the bottom five?

59. Mint Chocolate Cookie

Did you know: Mint chocolate chip ice cream was invented in 1973 in England. A student named Marilyn Ricketts enrolled in an ice cream competition, with the winner providing their frozen snack at the wedding of Princess Anne and Captain Mark Phillips.

Bottom line: Mint Chocolate Cookie is mint chocolate chip ice cream without the green food coloring and knock-off Oreos instead of chocolate chips. But why?

We get that it’s not mint chocolate chip, but Ben & Jerry’s have some amazing chips. Why not just add the chips? This is no substitute for mint chocolate chip ice cream, so if you want that, you’re better off getting a generic green-colored store brand pint.

Hugely disappointing.

Bottom line: Ben & Jerry’s primarily sticks to chocolate, leaving fruit fans wanting. But this flavor isn’t the answer.

While you do get a bit of cheesecake, the strawberry flavoring overpowers and ultimately feels oddly chemical.

Bottom line: Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Core is made with a “cookie milk ice cream,” which sort of just tastes like vanilla ice cream with chunks of chocolate chips.

There’s a cookie flavor, sure, and it’s not bad, but it’s just kind of bland. The core is grainy, but even if you like it, there just isn’t enough of it.

Overall, it’s one of the weakest offerings from Ben & Jerry’s. Just go with the original cookie dough flavor.

Bottom line: This ice cream is a collaboration with Netflix, specifically for the original series “Space Force.”

They say “boots on the moon” a lot in that show, which is presumably why the ice cream has its name. Well, that and the pieces of fudge molded into the shape of dairy cows.

The toffee “meteor clusters” are a welcome addition, but overall, it’s not that exciting. Plus, it’s one of the most calorific offerings Ben & Jerry’s currently has to offer.

55. Red, White and Blueberry

Did you know: Brain freeze happens due to the rapid constriction of blood vessels on the palate, which occurs when something very cold touches the roof of your mouth.

Bottom line: This light ice cream is a Walmart exclusive and is made with skim milk, so it has substantially less calories than a regular Ben & Jerry’s pint.

But that comes at a cost, because the frosty tribute to Old Glory has been met with lukewarm reviews. Most people say the blueberry and strawberry flavors are too weak, which just seems so un-American.

This should be a flavor bomb that honors the blasts of freedom from our fireworks and firearms.

Bottom line: Bananas, chocolate and walnuts — it’s a chunky, banana-filled pint that some people love and others hate, depending on how nuts you are for bananas and nuts.

We’d rather leave this one in the freezer.

Did you know: Thomas Jefferson is credited as being the first person in America to write down a recipe for ice cream and helped popularize the frozen snack.

Bottom line: Karamel Sutra isn’t as exciting as the name implies, since it’s just chocolate and caramel ice cream with some fudge chips.

The ice creams are boring, and the fudge chips are more of an accent flavor than anything else. The core, of course, is the real star here — it’s a fantastic buttery caramel that’s gone too soon.

But without the core, this ice cream is just bland. It isn’t worth it for the squirt of caramel.

Did you know: Ben & Jerry’s brought this ice cream back from its flavor graveyard. It originally debuted in 2012.

Bottom line: Cannoli has its roots in Holy Cannoli, a short-lived pint that lasted just a year, from 1997 to 1998. That recipe included roasted pistachios and ricotta, which probably didn’t help its popularity. That’s nothing against pistachios or ricotta, but it was probably just too much for a pint of ice cream.

The new iteration, the very simply titled Cannoli, is a mascarpone ice cream with fudge-covered pastry shell pieces. It just doesn’t really taste much like a cannoli, and we’re not a lover of mascarpone ice cream.

It’s a limited batch released in 2020, so if you think you’ll dig it, grab this one before it’s gone.

Bottom line: This Walmart exclusive flavor is vanilla ice cream stuffed with chocolate cookie sandwiches (knockoff Oreos).

It works because there are a whole lot of Oreos, but it’s also kind of uninspired and reminds us of regular cookies and cream ice cream.

There are better ice creams at Walmart.

Bottom line: Coffee Toffee Bar Crunch replaced the much-loved Coffee Heath Bar Crunch, and reviews were pretty negative. And we agree. This was no substitute.

See, Ben & Jerry’s stopped using Heath candy to reduce their usage of GMOs, and so they switched to toffee.

Unfortunately, toffee isn’t nearly as good as Heath bars. Pass.

Bottom line: Everything But The… is an ice cream that tastes like what it is: a bunch of stuff crammed into chocolate and vanilla ice creams.

Peanut butter cups, chocolate toffee, white chocolate chunks and chocolate almonds make each bite a little confusing. There’s just too much stuff going on here.

At least it’s named properly?

Did you know: Mint chocolate chip ice cream is the fifth-most popular ice cream in the United States. According to The Guardian, “It seems the profile of a mint chocolate chip lover is a middle-age white female living in the north-east in a domestic partnership earning over $80K.” Odd.

Bottom line: A take on the beloved mint chocolate chip flavor, Minter Wonderland is mint-flavored chocolate ice cream with marshmallows and chocolate cookie swirls.

It was good while it lasted, but this Target exclusive seems to be gone from shelves. We’d like to see B&J attempt another kind of mint ice cream.

46. Wake and ‘No Bake’ Cookie Dough Core

Did you know: The term “wake and bake” is believed to have originated from Grateful Dead fans in the 1960s. Which should surprise no one.

Bottom line: This Core offering serves up peanut butter and vanilla ice cream, adding peanut butter cookies and fudge chips with a no-bake cookie dough core.

That “no bake” cookie dough core may be the tipping point for some. You’ll either love it or hate it. It’s a cookie dough that isn’t meant to be baked and includes oats, chocolate and peanut butter. So it’s not really cookie dough, which some people hate.

The flavors are a bit muted, too.

Bottom line: S’mores is made of chocolate ice cream with fudge chunks, marshmallows and graham cracker swirls.

It’s a pretty good ice cream, although we prefer Gimme S’more, which has toasted marshmallow ice cream instead of chocolate.

Bottom line: Almond ice cream paired next to cherry ice cream, a sugar cookie dough core and cookies, cherries and shortbread cookies packed in — Sweet Like Sugar Cookie Dough Core has a lot going on.

Is it good? Yes, yes, it is, even for those who don’t dig sugar cookie dough. The almond ice cream (they say a “hint” of almond flavoring is used, but it’s pretty apparent) is delicious.

And you can’t go wrong with Ben & Jerry’s cherry ice cream.

43. Brownie Batter Core

Did you know: Ben & Jerry’s employees get three free pints of ice cream to take home each day. We hope their health-care plan includes gym membership reimbursement.

Bottom line: It’s vanilla and chocolate ice creams with fudge brownie junks and a soft brownie core wedged between it all. Since the ice creams are just regular chocolate and vanilla, this one depends on the core more than any other Core flavor.

And the core is pretty good. It’s more batter-y than hot fudge, and if you let the pint sit out for a little while, the core turns nice and gooey. It’s good, although unimaginative.

You could just get a jar of hot fudge and spoon it into a regular container of mixed-flavor ice creams and achieve the same result. Not that we’d know.

42. Cookies and Cream Cheesecake Core

Did you know: Ben & Jerry’s believes that ice cream should be served between 8 and 10 degrees Fahrenheit. If you’re lucky enough to be near a Ben & Jerry’s Scoop Shop, that’s how cold they keep their ice cream there.

Bottom line: Cheesecake ice cream, chocolate ice cream and chocolate cookies with a cheesecake core. That’s quite a combo, but does it deliver?

The cheesecake and chocolate ice creams are good, but probably not something you’d want to eat an entire pint of. That is to say, they’re second players to the star of the show: the cheesecake core. It’s fantastic. But like all Core ice creams, it depends on if your pint got a fair squeeze of the stuff. If you’re short-changed, then you probably won’t even bother finishing the ice cream after the core is gone.

Can they just sell all-core Core ice creams?

41. Berry Sweet Mascarpone

Bottom line: Blackberry and mascarpone ice creams with shortbread cookies and chocolate-covered almonds make up this fruity pint of fine ice cream.

Blackberry isn’t a typical ice cream flavor, so this one earns points for originality. People seem to like this one, but some have said that the nuts confuse the flavor while others think it’s just too bland.

40. Justice ReMix’d

Bottom line: B&J’s made this one a bit spicy because it represents “kick starting conversations about racial inequality in American and the need for criminal justice reform.”

While the cinnamon and chocolate ice cream itself is delicious, the cause behind it is more important. Ben & Jerry’s teamed up with the Advancement Project, a civil rights organization for racial justice, to highlight racism and criminal justice reform.

Ben & Jerry’s also is deploying ice cream trucks in some states “to spark conversations, activate community members, and give away ice cream,” the company said in a press release.

39. Pucker Upper

Bottom line: Let’s take a break from all the gooey goodness of ice cream to appreciate one of B&J’s rare sorbet offerings. This one is Pucker Upper, a very tart raspberry and lemonade sorbet with sour sugar bits coated in dairy to prevent melting.

It’s unlike anything on this list, not just because it’s not ice cream, but also because it’s a completely different flavor profile. It’s a quick, refreshing punch to the senses that’s best enjoyed on a hot summer day.

But it’s a limited batch, so it’ll be gone quickly.

38. Vanilla Caramel Fudge

For us, it’s just a little too simple, but the flavors are good, and there’s a good amount of syrup.

Bottom line: This offering from Ben &Jerry’s Core line is a swirl of mocha and caramel ice creams. The mocha is good, but the caramel is, well, caramel ice cream — it’s just sort of there to enhance the flavor of the mocha.

We’d argue that both the caramel and mocha ice creams could use a bit more flavor, but the chunky core tastes great.

Overall, it’s a good pick for coffee ice cream lovers who want something a bit different.

The pretzel swirls are divine, although we’d rather have more of them than those chocolate almonds.

Bottom line: Peanut Butter Fudge Core is a Core flavor with chocolate and peanut butter ice creams, mini peanut butter cups and a peanut butter fudge core. It’s no wonder why this is one of the most calorie-heavy ice creams from Ben & Jerry’s.

This one’s a bit divisive, with some people thinking that there isn’t enough peanut butter (or peanut butter cups), while others feeling that the overpowering chocolate flavors play to the peanut butter’s strengths.

34. Urban Bourbon

Bottom line: Burnt caramel ice cream with almonds, chocolate fudge and a caramel swirl made with bourbon. The “burnt” caramel ice cream has a deeper flavor profile than Ben & Jerry’s regular “meh” caramel ice cream, and the big chocolate fudge chips snap nicely.

The real star of the show, however, is the caramel swirl, which is made with real whiskey. It’s so good, but alas, it’s also gone.

Bottom line: Unlike most Core ice creams, this one only has one ice cream flavor: sweet cream. It’s flavored with blonde brownie bites and has a salted caramel core that’s perfectly salted.

The core is great, and the blonde brownies are fantastic, but we’re not big fans of sweet cream.

Ben & Jerry’s really needs to start selling their Cores as ice cream toppings.
