Bottom line: Established in the 1820s, Dahlonega was the site of the Georgia Gold Rush and briefly became a boomtown during that period. It’s theorized that one resident, Dr. Matthew Stephenson, was the source for the famous quote, “Thar’s gold in them thar hills!” That quote was written by Mark Twain for his character Mulberry Sellers, but it’s possible that Stephenson, who said “There’s millions in it” about a nearby hill, inspired the quote.
There are gold mines and lots of gold-related sights and activities to partake in, but you won’t need to strike gold to buy a home here: The median listing price in Daholnega is $268,700.
You can spend quite a bit more than that, though. There are several much more expensive homes. Like this colorful craftsman with a two-story deck that’s built right on Etowah River. It’s nestled in the North Georgia mountains and has two master suites.
